Webpage SEO Research

You have done your brainstorming and decided what products to sell on your website and now you're ready to build your website.
But not so fast. Before we collect content and create your website we need to do some keyword research

You need to download a free program called Goodkeywords from http://www.goodkeywords.com .

While you are about it download the Google toolbar from
http://toolbar.google.com as well. This allows us to check website page ranks.

You may have decided to use your website to sell "web software"

Now open Goodkeywords and click on the Google keywords tool.  Type in web software and you find it lists the search volume as 1,000,000.  We check it on a Google search and find there are 230,000,000 results for the search.

Targeting such a high traffic keyword as web software is not a good idea for a beginner because the competition for search engine eyeballs is fierce.

We'll start with "website design software". Anyone with a web presence needs a website.

You will notice the top search result for "website design software" brings up a webpage with a low Page Rank of 5. This is helpful to us because PR is one of the factors determining your website position on the search page.

Google uses Page rank to show how popular your website is. It is based on the number of websites with links pointing to your website. The more links you have pointing to your website the higher your page rank. This one of the factors Google uses to position your webpage in the search engine results.

We'll look at the no 1 website listed in the results - Free Website design - right click on it and select "view source". This will bring up the html code in an editor.

We need to look for:

* The main keyword within the domain name, the description and the keywords.

* Their use of header tags and whether they placed keyword "website design software" in those tags. They did not, so that's an advantage to us.

* Their use of their main keyword in the title tags of the website. Yes they are and this is why they are ranked highly in the search engine for "website design software".

* Bolded, underlined, or italicized the words "web design software"
anywhere in the body of the webpage. They haven't. Another plus for us.
We should bold some of the keywords in our copy.

* Whether or not they are using alt image tags and placing the keyword "web design software" within those tags. No they're not, so that's to our advantage. We could insert an image and call it web-design-software-graphic1.jpg.

* We also want to note if they've placed the keyword once at the very beginning of the copy and once at the very end of the copy. No they haven't done that, so that's something else we can improve on.

We now know we can out-optimise the #1 ranked website by doing things a little better in some respects.

Note:
If the top 5 websites for a specific keyword have a Google Page Rank of 6 or more, we should wait until after we get some initial traffic with less competitive easier ranking keywords.

These are the most crucial steps in optimising a website and provide it with a solid SEO foundation.
